What is Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)?

Inflammatory Bowel Disease or IBD is a general term that includes a variety of chronic disorders causing inflammation of the digestive tract, and the principal forms are:

  • Crohn's disease
  • Ulcerative colitis
  • Microscopic Colitis

All conditions involve different parts of the gastrointestinal tract.

Crohn’s Disease

Crohn’s disease can affect any part of the digestive tract, from the mouth to the anus, but is most commonly found in the small intestine and colon. It causes inflammation through the entire thickness of the bowel wall.

Symptoms often include:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Chronic diarrhoea
  • Weight loss
  • Fatigue
  • Malnutrition

Ulcerative Colitis

Ulcerative colitis affects only the colon (large intestine) and rectum, causing inflammation and ulcers in the innermost lining of the bowel.

Common symptoms include:

  • Bloody diarrhoea
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Urgency to defecate
  • Fatigue
  • Weight loss

Microscopic Colitis

This less common form of IBD affects the colon, causing chronic watery diarrhoea. It is called “microscopic” because inflammation is only visible under a microscope.

It shares similar symptoms as the other two, but differs by:

  • No visible inflammation
  • No rectal bleeding
  • Less severe abdominal pain
